Dear Hiring Manager,
I'm applying for the Academic Advisor position in the College of Arts and Sciences at Piedmont State University. Advising a caseload of 320 undergraduates, I raised second-to-third-year retention among my students from 81% to 93% by moving to mandatory one-on-one check-ins every semester instead of drop-in-only advising.
I build individualized degree plans using our Ellucian Degree Works system, catch scheduling conflicts before they cost students a semester, and evaluate transfer credit so incoming students don't lose progress they've already earned. For students on academic probation, I set up biweekly coaching sessions focused on study skills and time management, and 78% of my probation students returned to good standing within one term.
I also connect students to career services and internship opportunities early, because I've seen how much that clarity helps with retention on its own. Piedmont State's focus on proactive, data-driven advising is the model I already work in, and I'd welcome the opportunity to bring that experience to your team.
Sincerely,
Naomi Osei
