What hiring managers and ATS software look for in an engineering resume

Engineering screens start with credentials and software. A PE license, EIT status with your FE exam date, or a Six Sigma belt belongs in the header beside your name and again in a dedicated Licenses and Certifications section. Name tools exactly as the posting does, from AutoCAD Civil 3D and Revit to SolidWorks, CATIA, ANSYS, Altium Designer and MATLAB/Simulink, because a filter set for Civil 3D will not credit a line that only says CAD.

Bullets need engineering units, not adjectives. Write converter efficiency at 94 percent, manufacturing cost down 18 percent, 180 acres of stormwater detention designed, fatigue life improved 22 percent, first-pass approval on FCC submission or jurisdictional plan review. Group technical skills by CAD, simulation, manufacturing and standards, naming GD&T, DFM/DFA, IPC-2221, OSHA 30 and LEED, then give patents, publications and projects their own headings rather than a sidebar the parser skips.

Engineering resume questions, answered

Where should a PE license go on an engineering resume?

Put it in the title line under your name, written as Civil Engineer, PE, and repeat it in a Licenses and Certifications section with the issuing state and license number. If you are not licensed yet, list EIT status and the scheduled PE exam date. Header and section placement both parse reliably; a graphic badge or sidebar does not.

How long should an engineering resume be?

One page through roughly five years of experience. Beyond that, two pages are standard, and three are accepted for engineers carrying long project lists, patents or publications. Do not shrink margins or fonts to force one page. Compress older roles to a single line each and cut projects that no longer match the job ad. Keep it single column at any length.

Does an engineering resume need a separate projects section?

Yes for early-career and civil candidates, where project scope is the resume. List the project name, your role and the scale: budget, acreage, unit count, linear feet. Senior engineers can fold projects into experience bullets and keep a short Patents or Publications section instead. Add portfolio or drawing-set links as plain text URLs, never as buttons or embedded images.

How do I list a security clearance on an engineering resume?

State the level and status in the header or on a Clearance line directly beneath it, such as Active DoD Secret, granted 2023. Defense recruiters filter on the exact terms Secret, Top Secret and TS/SCI, so match the wording in the posting. Never include investigation dates, case numbers or details of classified programs.
