What hospital recruiters and ATS screens look for in a healthcare resume

Credentials are the first filter. Hospital and health-system applicant tracking systems search for exact strings — RN, PA-C, PharmD, RPh, NCCPA-certified, DEA, BLS, ACLS, PALS — along with your state license and its current status. Put those in the header or a dedicated Licensure and Certifications block above the experience section, and write each credential the way the job posting writes it.

Specialty and volume come next. Name the unit or setting in your title — ICU, emergency medicine, med-surg, retail or clinical pharmacy — then quantify it: patient load per shift, procedures performed annually, prescriptions verified daily, MTM interventions, readmission or door-to-provider improvements. Spell out every system you have charted in, including Epic, Cerner, Meditech, Epic Willow, PioneerRx, and eClinicalWorks, because those parse as literal keywords.

Healthcare resume questions, answered

Where should an RN license or PA-C certification go on a resume?

Put the credential beside your name in the header — Sarah Martinez, RN, BSN, CCRN — and repeat it in a Licensure and Certifications section directly under the summary, with issuing state, license number or status, and expiration. Keep those lines as plain text. Credentials placed in a sidebar, table, or text box are the ones that vanish during parsing.

How long should a nursing or clinical resume be?

Two pages is normal for licensed clinicians with a few years of practice, and often necessary for pharmacists and PAs carrying licensure, certification, and procedure lists. New graduates should hold to one page. Length is rarely what breaks ATS parsing — multi-column layouts, contact details buried in a header or footer, and graphics are.

Should clinical rotations go on a new-graduate nurse or PA resume?

Yes, as a dedicated Clinical Rotations section listing facility, unit, hours, and what was actually done: Emergency Medicine, Level I trauma center, 640 hours, 15 patients per shift. Rotations are where a new graduate proves keyword coverage for Epic, triage, history and physical documentation, or medication administration. After two or three licensed years, cut the section to one line.

How should travel nurses list multiple assignments and state licenses?

Group contracts under the staffing agency as one employer — Travel RN, Aya Healthcare, 2022 to 2024 — with each facility, unit, and dates nested beneath, so short stints do not read as job hopping. List every active state license and Nurse Licensure Compact status by name, because recruiters search specific state terms.
