What HR hiring managers and ATS filters look for in a human resources resume

Certifications carry weight here, so put SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, SPHR, CCP, or CEBS beside your name and repeat them under Certifications with the awarding body and year; an in-progress PHR still counts as a match. Then name systems exactly: Workday, ADP Workforce Now, BambooHR, Paycom, SAP SuccessFactors, UKG, Greenhouse, Lever, iCIMS, LinkedIn Recruiter. A line that only says HRIS matches nothing.

Compliance language is matched literally, so FMLA, ADA, FLSA, EEOC, Title VII, I-9, E-Verify, COBRA, ERISA, and EEO-1 reporting need to appear as the posting spells them. Back them with the metrics this field runs on: headcount supported, voluntary turnover reduction, time-to-fill, offer-acceptance rate, cost per hire, jobs benchmarked, employees covered by a pay-equity audit. Comp analysts should add Radford, Mercer, Excel, and SQL under Technical Skills.

Human Resources resume questions, answered

Where should SHRM-CP, PHR, or SPHR go on an HR resume?

On the header line right after your name, as in Dana Ruiz, SHRM-CP, and again in a Certifications section under the summary, with the awarding body, HRCI or SHRM, and the year. In-progress credentials belong there too, written as PHR, exam scheduled March 2026. Keep those lines plain text; sidebars and text boxes are where credentials get dropped in parsing.

How long should a human resources resume be?

One page for coordinators, assistants, and recruiters with under about eight years. Two pages once you own headcount, a compliance function, or a team, which is normal for HR managers, HRBPs, and directors. Structure matters more than length: a single column parses most reliably, so keep contact details in the body rather than a header or footer, and never build experience as a table.

Do recruiters need to name the exact ATS they have used?

Yes. Talent teams screen for their own stack, and the match is literal, so a Greenhouse requisition will not score a resume that says applicant tracking system. List each platform by name on a plain skills line: Greenhouse, Lever, iCIMS, Workday Recruiting, Taleo, SmartRecruiters, LinkedIn Recruiter. Use the posting's spelling, including full-cycle recruiting, Boolean search, and time-to-fill.

How do you quantify HR or compensation work without exposing confidential employee data?

Report scope and outcome, never individuals. Write headcount supported, requisitions filled per quarter, cases handled, jobs benchmarked, or employees covered by a pay-equity review, then the result: voluntary turnover down, time-to-fill cut, zero findings across two I-9 audits. For compensation, cite band counts, survey sources such as Radford or Mercer, and plan savings rather than any salary figure.
