Admission comes first. Firm and in-house ATS screens search for literal strings — JD, admitted to the New York and California bars, CP, PACE, CCEP, CAMS, CRCM — so put them beside your name and again in a Bar Admissions or Certifications block above experience, with state and year. Paralegals should add notary commission and e-filing authority there, since many firms filter on those two alone.
Then it is practice area, platform, and volume. Name the specialty — litigation, IP prosecution, SaaS licensing, AML — and every system by product name: Westlaw, LexisNexis, Relativity, Concordance, Clio, iManage, CM/ECF e-filing. Quantify what this field measures: documents coded for privilege, exhibits managed at trial, annual contract value negotiated, review cycle cut from ten days to three, audit findings closed. Write GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, SOX, and FINRA exactly as the posting spells them.
Legal resume questions, answered
Where should bar admissions go on an attorney resume?
Give them their own Bar Admissions section directly under the header, listing each jurisdiction and year of admission: New York, 2018; New Jersey, 2019. Mark inactive or pending admissions plainly rather than omitting them. Keep the lines as plain text in a single column. Admissions set in a sidebar or table are the ones parsers drop.
How long should a legal resume be?
One page for paralegals and associates under roughly eight years, two once you manage matters, budgets, or outside counsel. In-house postings reward business impact over pedigree, so trim law school detail — law review, moot court, class rank — after your first few years and give the space to contract volume, matters closed, or risk reduced. A single column parses most reliably at either length.
How can legal work be quantified without breaching client confidentiality?
Describe the matter, not the client. Write a Fortune 100 medical device manufacturer or a $400M cross-border acquisition, then quantify your own scope: 22,000 exhibits managed, 15,000 documents coded for privilege, $60M in annual contract value negotiated, three multi-week jury trials supported. A short Representative Matters section handles this well and keeps every number verifiable in an interview.
Where do paralegal and compliance certifications belong on the resume?
In a Certifications section above experience, spelled the way the credential and the job ad spell it: NALA Certified Paralegal (CP), PACE Registered Paralegal, CCEP, CAMS, CRCM. Paralegals should list notary commission and CM/ECF e-filing authority on the same lines, since firms filter on them. Compliance candidates should name regulators they have faced — SEC, FINRA, OCC — in experience bullets.
